What is going on with the Worlds official song?

When the ISU put out an entire press release last month to announce the official song for Worlds 2021, I didn’t pay it much attention. I was more interested in hearing what they planned to do to make the competition safe and prevent athletes from contracting a potentially deadly disease, not hear some random pop song that they picked out for the event. But now I’ve listened to the song and seen the video and I kind of need to talk about it.

Like everything else, the world of figure skating looks dramatically different in the COVID-19 era. A sport usually so reliant on audience reaction is now eerily silent, with no spectators being allowed at any American events this season. Taking a cue from Major League Baseball, US Figure Skating naturally took to selling cardboard cutouts of fans to line the stands at their major events of 2020, but it was a different kind of cutout who really stole the show.
