What to Watch
The top US dance teams will be facing off early this year, with the gold medal most likely going to Hubbell/Donohue or Chock/Bates. The two teams are always within a few points of each other and have been trading the American #1 spot back and forth over the past few seasons and finishing 2nd and 4th at the most recent World Championships. Hubbell/Donohue have had the edge lately, but Chock/Bates have been on a big PR push lately, even releasing their own podcast together, and have gone all out on a risky sci-fi Daft Punk free dance for this season. This will be a major match-up to track throughout the season as whoever comes out on top will have US Figure Skating’s backing in their push to nab an Olympic medal.
Also in a tight national rivalry (though their competitors won’t be at this event), Smart/Diaz need strong, consistent skates all season long to grab Spain’s single Olympic dance spot. Their scores from every event will be added up and compared against Hurtado/Khaliavin to decide who gets the spot, so every last tenth of a point is important.
Smart/Diaz will be battling for the bronze against the Canadian team of Fournier Beaudry/Sorensen, who have yet to compete this season.
